Mike Pettifer

Director, Academies and Maintained Schools,
Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA)

Mike began his career teaching English and worked for five years at the City of Westminster College eventually running youth training programmes and working with employers. Mike moved to London East Training & Enterprise Council where he worked with employers and managed the European Social Fund and other externally funding programmes. In April 2001, Mike transferred to the Learning & Skills Council. He spent most of his time working in East London and across London on policy, planning and funding. He also spent time in the East of England running the Cambridgeshire local office, and regional performance and planning. From October 2008 Mike led the London LSC transfer to the Young People’s Learning Agency (YPLA) and local authorities. Mike then moved to the YPLA working in London and later his responsibility expanded to cover the South East. In February 2012, Mike lead the national Academy Funding Team where he worked on implementing the 13/14 Funding Reforms and modernising the system. In June 2015, Mike’s responsibilities expanded to include working with local authorities on school funding. Mike has been the Director of the Academies and Maintained Schools Group since August 2016.
