Chris Deller

Headteacher - Bedford Academy

Chris is Headteacher at Bedford Academy, an oversubscribed Secondary School in a considerably deprived area of Bedford. Chris has a degree in Business and Sport Education from Nottingham Trent University, and completed a PGCE in PE at Bedford University. Chris held a number of middle leadership roles before starting his Senior leadership journey. During his fifteen years teaching, Chris has taught a variety of different subjects, and held positions of responsibility across a vast range of whole school areas including transition, curriculum development and raising attainment. Chris achieved the National Professional Qualification for Headship in 2019 and is currently completing the National Professional Qualification for Executive Leaders.

Chris has created an open and honest culture at his school, developing a real passion for engaging the local community and promoting the welfare of staff and students. A key part of this has been ‘The BA Way’,–values/50.html which forms the basis for all of the schools vision and ethos. Basic principles of having high expectations, setting achievable standards and developing trust have been core principles on which the school has developed its local and regional reputation over time. Chris has overseen the growth of the school and improved retention of staff in the last three years, moving from 1100 to 1400 students, including the doubling in size of the Sixth form, and annual staff turnover reducing from 16% to 6% from 2018. Wellbeing is at the core of the school offer for all staff and students, with regular surveys and staff consultations engaging the school community to contribute to improving the educational experience for its families. Bedford Academy is admitting its largest group of Year 7 students in September 2022 (260) due to the demand for spaces in the local area.
